“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” — Lao Tzu
This is where Lao Tzu’s wisdom encourages us to realize that no matter what we are about to attempt, we must recognize that it starts with that first step. No matter what, it could be as simple as putting on your shoes and stepping to the edge of a path. It doesn’t have to be perfect or significant; it just needs to be a step forward.
As I go through life and face new challenges or simply in the act of living, I realize it all has to begin somewhere. You may have thought about picking up a new hobby, starting a workout, or learning something new. It can seem overwhelming to think about all you must do to achieve what is in front of you. When you focus on that first step—like calling a friend to join you or signing up for a class—you realize that big goals are just a series of little actions. It always starts with some physical next step.
I have found this quote to be a reminder that progress isn’t about simply making it to the Finish Line; it’s about showing up, taking that first step, and then the next one, and the next. Each effort builds on the last; before you know it, you’re going through whatever you face.
So, whether it’s starting a conversation with someone new, tackling a project you’ve been putting off, or trying something entirely outside your comfort zone, just remember: it all starts with that one step. And that’s something we can all relate to, no matter what stage we find ourselves in our life.
