Why Can’t I Start?

Why Can’t I Start?

“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”
– Walt Disney

Hey there! I just came from a delightful breakfast meeting with a colleague and fellow board member, and we had a great chat about pushing our goals forward. We also dove into why we sometimes hit a snag in making progress. I shared something with him that I’ve found to be incredibly helpful, and I think it can work wonders for both individuals and organizations alike! I’m excited to share this principle with you all in this blog. A big shout out to Aaron for inspiring me to share these insights!

Have you ever found yourself facing an opportunity only to turn away? I certainly have! It’s puzzling. Even when something excites me, I hesitate to take that first step. Why is that? Is it because I feel overwhelmed or recognize the effort involved? I also know I will often walk away from the task if I don’t have a clear next step.

I’ve pondered this question numerous times, and I was stuck in that cycle for a long while. However, I recently discovered a straightforward yet effective strategy that has proven transformative. When I encounter an opportunity, I ask myself, “What is the smallest action I can take right now?”

You know what? It works wonders! That initial tiny step often unleashes a cascade of momentum. It’s akin to priming a pump—once you give it that first push, a flow of creativity and productivity follows.

David Allen emphasizes the importance of identifying the “next action,” and there’s genuine power in this approach. When I break tasks down into manageable steps, starting becomes significantly easier. Here are some practical applications you can implement in your own life:

      1. Set, Clear, Small Goals: If you want to write a book, don’t focus on finishing it. Instead, commit to writing just one paragraph today. This will reduce the intimidation factor and make it easier to start.

      1. Create a Routine: Establish a dedicated time each day to work on your goals, even if it’s just 10 minutes. Consistency builds momentum. Schedule it just like any other appointment on your calendar.

      1. Visualize Your Progress: Keep a journal where you document your small achievements. This will not only track your progress but also motivate you to keep moving forward.

      1. Accountability Partner: Share your goals with a friend or family member. Have someone check your progress can encourage you to take those small actions.

    1. Eliminate Distractions: Identify what typically holds you back and create a space free from those distractions. This might mean decluttering your workspace or setting boundaries with technology during your dedicated time.

I encourage you to try this approach! No matter what challenges or opportunities life presents, focus on the next physical step and take it.

Remember, there’s true magic in action. Embrace it, and watch how your world transforms!
