“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

Do you know what’s easy? Sitting on an idea. Thinking about it. Planning for it. Even talking about it like it’s already real. But nothing truly happens until you take that first step. That’s where the magic is.

I’ve seen it more times than I can count—and I’ll bet you have, too. Whether picking up a new hobby, starting a new routine, or launching into something as big as retirement, it always begins the same way: with a tiny, deliberate action.

Not long ago, I decided to get back into painting after decades away from the canvas. I’ll be honest—the blank canvas was intimidating. But something shifted once I picked up the brush and made that first stroke (messy as it was). It wasn’t just paint on a page—it was momentum. One step led to another, and soon, I wasn’t just painting—I was playing, exploring, and expressing.

That’s the beauty of beginnings. They don’t have to be significant. They have to be authentic.

Maybe you’ve been thinking about starting something—writing, gardening, traveling, volunteering, you name it. Perhaps you’ve gathered all the supplies, watched the how-to videos, and discussed it with friends. That’s all good groundwork. But the transformation starts when you say, “Okay, let’s do this,” and take that first step.

Sure, it can be uncomfortable. That’s normal. But it’s also thrilling. That one small action—planting the seed, signing up for the class, dusting off the old dream—is a statement: I’m ready for what’s next.

And here’s the thing: once you move, the world responds. You find support, encouragement, and connection. That first step doesn’t just change you—it often inspires others, too.

Whatever’s stirring in you right now—whatever idea has been sitting quietly on the back burner—I invite you to take a step. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be yours.

Because one step leads to the next, and before you know it, you’re not just imagining a new chapter—you’re living it.

Let’s celebrate the courage it takes to begin. That’s where all the good stuff starts.

“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

Zig Ziglar.

I grew up listening to Zig Ziglar’s talks and reading his books. He was so motivating to me. I wrote down this quote many years ago and think about it often.

In his unique way, he emphasized the importance of taking action. If you are going to achieve anything in life, it starts at the beginning. Success comes only with this precursor. It suggests that people often hesitate to pursue their desires, outcomes, or dreams because they feel ill-prepared or ready to be perfect at it. However, the key is we all have to begin somewhere. It sounds so obvious, but it often isn’t. In many ways and aspects of life, we are novices.

If I go back to my training in psychology, this is tied to the concept of self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is our belief in our own ability to successfully navigate new situations. We all have questions about whether we have the ability, energy, or even interest to attempt something new. Zig’s quote encourages us to start, no matter our skill level. This is the fundamental first step toward improvement and even mastery. It teaches us that through practice, learning, and perseverance, all of us can develop our skills over time and may even reach levels of greatness.

Even as a teenage boy, it was a motivational reminder that any success I want in life will require initial effort, taking the first step. That step might happen when I have questions about my ability, but it still begins with that first step.

Throughout my life, I have believed that “done is better than perfect.” Too often, I would worry that if something wasn’t perfect, I might be seen as insufficient for whatever the task was. It was the last thing I wanted. It’s so freeing to understand that striving for perfection often leads to anxiety and procrastination rather than progress.

Here are three key tips that might help you embrace the mindset that ” done is better than perfect.”

First, set realistic goals. Unattainable goals only cause procrastination and anxiety, which doesn’t help. Instead, break your tasks into manageable steps. While working on my book, The Magic of a Moment, I learned that completing a chapter, even if it wasn’t flawless, was far more rewarding than obsessing over every word. I also learned to celebrate small victories; they build momentum and motivate you to keep going.

Second, embrace imperfection. Understand that no one is perfect. Seek to make your experiences and contributions mean something to you, even if they aren’t perfect. I often remind myself that mistakes are invaluable learning opportunities. When I shifted my focus from wanting to create the ideal book to just deliver the best I could at that moment, I found a greater connection with my readers and greater satisfaction for myself.

Lastly, take action. This is truly the key. Sometimes, the most powerful step is to sit down, write the first sentence, pick up that dog toy, or read one page. It’s easy to get caught in the paralysis of overthinking. I’ve found that taking action leads to growth and improvement, even if it’s not perfect.

In conclusion, embracing that done is better than perfect has transformed my approach to life. It allows for growth, connection, and, most importantly, peace in a world that often demands perfection. So take that leap, my friends; progress is what truly matters!
